Inclusion fuels success at Wholesale Club Calgary

At the Wholesale Club (Northeast and Southeast locations) in Calgary, inclusion isn't just a buzzword. The stores recently received the prestigious Inclusive Employer Award from Gateway Association Alberta, a not-for-profit family and employment resource centre that supports job seekers and employers in the pursuit of inclusive workplaces. They are focused on empowering people living with disabilities and to support the development of diverse communities and workplaces.

This incredible achievement is a team effort, but Store Managers Bharat Desai and Alexander Chan, alongside their District Manager Scott Hamell, have been instrumental in making this vision a reality. Their journey began by welcoming Isaac and James, participants from Gateway Association, into their team.

"We knew we had to approach this differently," Alex explains. "It wasn't just about offering a job; it was about creating a welcoming and supportive environment from day one."

Recognizing that traditional hiring processes can be overwhelming for some, Bharat and Alex adapted their approach to ensure a comfortable and supportive experience for Isaac and James. They provided comprehensive, step-by-step job training, setting them up for success in their roles as Courtesy Clerk and Overnight Produce Clerk.

"We focused on building a strong foundation, taking things one step at a time," Bharat adds. "It was all about celebrating the small victories and building confidence along the way."

"Seeing Isaac thrive here just reinforces what I've always believed," Bharat shares, a proud smile lighting up his face. "Everyone deserves a chance, and sometimes, all it takes is a little understanding and support to unlock someone's potential."

Alex, a champion for celebrating individual learning styles, echoes this sentiment. "We all learn and grow at our own pace," he explains. "By embracing those differences and providing the right support, we create a much stronger and more resilient team."

The impact of their dedication is evident in the positive attitudes and strong work ethic that Isaac and James bring to Wholesale Club each day. They have become valued members of the team, inspiring their colleagues with their dedication.

But Bharat and Alex's commitment to inclusivity extends beyond their partnership with Gateway Association Alberta. They are both actively involved in their communities, supporting local food banks, sponsoring parades, and championing organizations that assist individuals facing mental health challenges and addiction.

"For us, it's about paying it forward," Bharat explains. "We believe in building a stronger community for everyone."

Humbled and honoured to receive the Inclusive Employer Award, Bharat and Alex credit the supportive culture fostered by their leadership team and Loblaw as a whole. Their story is a shining example of how we can all work together to create a more inclusive and welcoming workplace for everyone.
