The idea of The Gathering Place in Nackawic, New Brunswick began with a quiet realization—seniors were not just visiting their local Your Independent Grocer to shop; they were searching for a place to connect, share company, and build a sense of community. While the Nackawic community had long hoped for a Senior Centre, it was clear to J-Lynn’s Your Independent Grocer owners, John and J-Lynn Jensen, that there had been little direction on how to bring this vision to life. So, in December 2022, they took it upon themselves to fill this need.
"Our local community really rallied around our idea,” said J-Lynn. “Once we found the perfect space, more and more people came on board to help us complete the fully functioning community centre in just three weeks.”
John and J-Lynn introduced donation opportunities for their customers at checkout, while also sharing their vision with other local businesses, car dealerships, and realtors. Members of the community donated furniture, dishes, and decor, while local professionals—including plumbers, electricians, and flooring experts—offered their services at no cost.
“We always knew that the Gathering Place would play a much-needed role in our community, but for some, it has truly become a lifeline,” explained John. “One of our customers, Gerald, lost his wife five years ago and he now visits the centre daily. It’s really helped lift his spirits and ease the loneliness.”
Initially open six days a week, the centre has now expanded to seven and welcomes 30-50 visitors each day. It also offers programs like the Wheels 2 Wellness transport service, along with senior-led activities such as bowling, cribbage, and ukulele sessions.
Over time, the centre has also continued to expand its role well beyond just being a social hub and now serves as a meeting space for the Nackawic & Area Wellness Committee.
By helping establish the Gathering Place, the impact John and J-Lynn have had on the Nackawic community is undeniable. Their story is one of collaboration, determination, and the strength of local community banding together. What began as a simple idea has blossomed into a vital community asset—one that Nackawic can be proud of for years to come.
