Derrick transitions from grocery to beauty at Shoppers
April 3, 2025

Derrick Pittman’s retail career began in 1993 in the Loblaw bakery department, where he quickly learned the ins and outs of the business. Over the next 30 years, he steadily climbed the ladder—holding positions from Store Manager to District Manager and eventually Vice President of Operations across Loblaws, Zehrs, Provigo, and Market Franchise. In 2023, he served as the Senior Vice President (SVP), Operations for Real Atlantic Superstore, Dominion, and Market Franchise, cementing his reputation as a seasoned operator who understands retail at every level. Derrick’s progression wasn’t just about moving up; it was about building a deep understanding of everyday retail challenges by working side by side with frontline teams.
In 2025, Derrick decided it was time for a fresh challenge. He joined Shoppers Drug Mart as the SVP of National Operations—a move that isn’t just another corporate shift but a personal commitment to a brand he trusts. As a regular Shoppers customer, Derrick experiences firsthand what it means to rely on these stores for everyday needs, whether it’s a quick prescription pickup or essential household items. His decision to transition from grocery to beauty and pharmacy is driven by his desire to learn a new business while applying the operational expertise he’s honed over decades.
“Shopper Drug Mart’s beauty department is a standout in Canadian retail, and its patient-focused pharmacies and care clinics are making health care more accessible for Canadians across the country,” says Derrick. “I’m excited for all there is to learn, but also keen to use my past experience to improve the grocery experience at Shoppers, especially by enhancing the multicultural product selection.”
One of his immediate priorities at Shoppers Drug Mart is addressing the persistent issue of shrink, particularly the challenges posed by organized crime. Derrick is implementing straightforward measures like revamped queuing systems at checkouts, where customers now interact with a staff member before leaving and installing security gates at the entrance of beautyBOUTIQUE® areas. These initiatives are designed to enhance security without disrupting the everyday shopping experience, ensuring that both customers and team members feel safe and supported.
Derrick knows the best ideas often come from those closest to the day-to-day operations of a store and actively seeks out feedback from Associate-Owners and their teams and even customers. Having held leadership roles for much of his career, Derrick has distilled his experiences into a clear and effective leadership philosophy. “Above all, you have to listen to your teams because everybody in the field is going to tell you everything you need to know,” he says.
“And second, when you get their feedback, it’s important to actually do something about it. This will benefit employees and customers in the end.”
Derrick is a frequent Shoppers customer too. “Shoppers is my go-to for all essential items. It’s always a very convenient shop for me,” he explains. Derrick relies on Shoppers for everything from allergy medicine to an impromptu mid-week milk run, and his family’s prescriptions. “I really appreciate the relationships that my family and I have built with our local pharmacist,” he says. “The personal connection that the Shoppers’ teams foster with their patients is what makes the biggest difference for me and my family.”
Speaking of his family, the news of Derrick’s move to Shoppers Drug Mart was met with enthusiasm by his wife and two daughters. “Both of my girls worked at Shoppers during high school and were both excited to offer me some informal ‘training’ based on their time in store,” shares Derrick.
When he’s not exploring the world of cosmetics, Derrick enjoys golfing and visiting wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake with his wife.
Derrick’s journey so far is one of continuous learning and a passion for delivering exceptional customer experiences. With his collaborative approach and focus on innovation, he’s poised to make a positive impact on the future of Shoppers Drug Mart.
