Kevin’s journey to inclusive hiring
October 29, 2024
Kevin Godard, Owner, Godard's Your Independent Grocer in Meaford, Ontario, is a passionate advocate for inclusive hiring who believes in creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered. Growing up, Kevin witnessed firsthand the power of accessibility through his father's work launching a Handi-Transit program, a curb-to-curb transportation service for persons with physical disabilities who are unable to use the conventional bus system. This experience, coupled with raising a son on the autism spectrum, ignited a fire in him to champion opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
"I guess I've always had a desire to fight for the 'underdog' and for equality," Kevin shares. This passion led him to spearhead the "Ready, Willing and Able" initiative at his store, partnering with local high schools and agencies to connect with talented individuals with disabilities seeking employment.
Kevin understands the ripple effect of inclusive hiring.
"You have to realize that giving people with disabilities opportunities for employment positively impacts that person's entire family; the effect goes well beyond the person you’re hiring," he says.
Kevin started his search by posting on social media stating his support to hiring inclusively, including persons with a disability. Since then, the post blew up with such positive response from the community. “Eight per cent of our workforce identifies as a person with a disability, and I can’t tell you the amount of mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles and friends that stop me in the store to thank us for giving them an opportunity to earn a paycheck - it gives you goosebumps.”
His approach is simple yet effective. He ensures the hiring process is accessible by asking about accommodation needs upfront and collaborates with support workers and families to set new employees up for success. "I don’t like using the word 'accommodation' because it sounds so ominous," he says. "It’s really about making small adjustments. The key is listening, then working collectively to see what adjustments can be made and then executing them.”
The impact on the store's culture has been remarkable. Team morale has skyrocketed as team members rally around each other, fostering a spirit of teamwork and camaraderie. Customers have also taken notice, showering the store with positive feedback for their commitment to inclusivity.
Kevin has a message for other businesses hesitant to embrace inclusive hiring: "Be curious about what could happen in your store. Start small, partner with local organizations, and reach out for support. It's about taking that first step and realizing the incredible potential that lies in embracing diversity."
His vision for the future is clear: " I see us continuing to build on this inclusion and finding new ways to open up possibilities for everyone."
Kevin's story is a testament to the power of inclusive hiring, proving that when we create opportunities for everyone to thrive, we all benefit.
