Food insecurity remains a significant challenge across Canada. According to the recent Second Harvest report, the unfortunate reality is that 46.5% of all food in Canada is wasted, but 41.7% of this wasted food could be rescued to support communities across Canada.

However, a powerful partnership is making a real difference.

Since November 2022, our distribution centres have partnered with Second Harvest, Canada’s largest food rescue charity, to donate damaged but usable food. Together, they have achieved a remarkable milestone: rescuing and redistributing over 22 million pounds of food to those in need.

This collaboration underscores the vital role the grocery retail industry can play in combating food insecurity and minimizing food waste.

Tom Anderson, Senior Supervisor, Safety and Compliance at Loblaw's Regina distribution centre, has witnessed the impact of Loblaw’s food recovery program firsthand.

"Working with Second Harvest, we see the true value of our donations," Anderson explains. "The Regina DC alone has donated over 4 million pounds of food, allowing us to reach various local food banks within the community that need assistance."

The program effectively diverts damaged food that is not suitable to go to stores – including fresh produce, meat, and dairy – from landfills.

"So much effort goes into growing produce and raising animals to bring these products to us. Knowing that those efforts aren't wasted, and that the food is reaching someone in need is incredibly important," Anderson emphasizes.

"Loblaw’s commitment to food rescue is truly commendable! As one of Second Harvest’s first and most dedicated donors, they have played a pivotal role in ensuring that millions of nutritious meals reach Canadians facing food insecurity. The company’s leadership in reducing food waste and fighting hunger is transformative. Together, we are making a powerful, lasting impact and moving closer to a future where no one goes hungry."

Recently, Second Harvest recognized the Regina Distribution Centre (DC 34) with a Food Defender Award which recognizes outstanding franchise locations whose support for Second Harvest goes beyond initiatives or impact from their parent companies. Second Harvest has also recognized Loblaw with a Transformational Partnership Award.
