Let’s talk about the price you pay for meat
Published Date: January 16, 2025
Meat weights have been in the news, and we understand the concern. Here is how it is supposed to work: the price customers pay for meat is meant to be only for the meat itself, not the packaging it comes in. For customers in a small number of Western Canadian stores in 2023, weights from a change made to more environmentally-friendly packaging were not updated correctly in the system. This meant that for a few products, customers in these stores were charged more than they should have been. Transparency is important to us, and we want to provide some background on this issue. Simply put, in this situation we made a mistake. We take this concern seriously and sincerely apologize for the error. Customers should be able to trust the accuracy of the pricing labels on their food products. We took action to correct this when it happened. While this issue wasn’t far reaching, we know that every penny counts and we again apologize for this happening. In addition to correcting the issue, we have taken several actions to further reduce the likelihood of this happening again and also to compensate our customers. More specifically, in the impacted stores we are applying discounts on the products that were affected by this issue, so that customers are made whole. We have also refreshed training at all of our stores, and increased our oversight including twice annual audits to complement routine government inspections. Further, we have been reviewing products across our system and our processes to check accuracy of meat product weights and pricing. We know you have high expectations of our company and our stores. We do too, and we will continue to do what we can to live up to them, and to our company’s purpose: helping Canadians Live Life Well.
