New year, new goals! Stephanie Moreira, District Manager, knows a thing or two about achieving career aspirations. Over her 20 years at Loblaw, she's held a variety of roles, starting as a cashier at the Forest Hill market in 2004 and now overseeing a whole district of Your Independent Grocer and valu-mart stores. It's been an incredible journey fueled by her commitment to setting and achieving meaningful goals.

From Customer Service Manager to Store Manager, and finally District Manager, each step brought new challenges and opportunities for growth. Stephanie quickly realized that setting the right goals was key to her success. Early on, she focused her Individual Development Plans (IDPs) on honing her leadership and communication skills – skills she knew were essential for advancement.

"I knew I wanted to become a leader," Stephanie shares. "To get there, I set clear goals to enhance my communication and public speaking skills and sought out leadership opportunities." By identifying her ultimate goal, she could break it down into smaller, achievable steps.

Stephanie emphasizes the importance of setting meaningful and attainable goals. "I reflect on my strengths and areas for improvement, and I seek feedback from colleagues, senior leaders, and mentors," she explains. "Their insights are invaluable."

Of course, the journey wasn't always easy. There were times when her goals felt overwhelming or too long-term. Stephanie's solution? Break them down into smaller milestones and celebrate the quick wins!

"Celebrating those small victories, reflecting on my progress, and constantly seeking feedback kept me motivated," she says.

Now, as a leader herself, Stephanie is passionate about empowering her team to embrace goal setting. She has regular meetings with her team members to discuss aspirations, strengths, and areas for improvement, while providing guidance and encouraging skill development.

Her advice to colleagues? "Be specific with your goals! I wish I had been even more specific early on, which would have helped me achieve them faster," she says.

“Goal setting isn't a one-time activity, it's a continuous journey of self-reflection, learning, and growth.”
